Happiness Before Success

Hey, y’all! I finally posted a new video in the Skills, Techniques, and Other Useful Stuff page! Each time I post something to that page I will be writing a little blurb about it here just so I can give you more information, tips and tricks, as well as just my own opinion.

The video I posted today is called The Happy Secret to Better Work by Shawn Acher. It’s a TED talk and probably my favorite one. Shawn makes a lot of great points about how to be more successful at the work you do, but I think it’s a great lesson not only for our careers or jobs but just for anything we decide to do.

Shawn starts with discussing how whenever we talk about “normal” we are just talking about average. How can we be successful at what we are doing if we are all just being average? Instead we need to use what he calls Positive Psychology to get our brains working more successfully. In order to get above average, we need to change our thinking and just be happy in where we are. He’s not talking about settling with where we are, but having a positive attitude about where we are. We have to become positive and happy thinkers so that our brains can work more efficiently and become more successful.

At the end of the video, he gives five excellent activities we can do each day to change our thinking and change our outcomes:

  • 3 gratitudes (I’m going to come back to this one in a later skill/blog)
  • Journaling
  • Exercise
  • Meditation
  • Random Acts of Kindness

I absolutely love these ideas! We don’t have to do each and every one of these every single day, but we should strive to do at least one of them consistently every day. The top four of these are my personal go to’s for those days I need a little extra push or to combat any negative thoughts I get. They are extremely powerful tools, and I highly encourage you to adopt at least one of them into your daily routine!

I have only highlighted a few things from the video. I really hope you check it out! He makes some really amazing points and does it with an excellent sense of humor. I’ve seen it several times and still laugh out loud at it! I hope you enjoy; and as always, if you have questions, comments, or just need to talk please feel free to email me or leave a comment below!
